Of all of the the animals that live today, the one I find to most closely match a dragon's attitude is a cat. Ferocious predators that nature has honed into the perfect killers on land, they also are intelligent and self reliant. 

There is little wonder why I would I create a dragon out of them. With a unique paint job to highlight its otherworldliness, it shows off another finish besides the fossil finish.
